Preparing and applying for surgical registrar
Before stepping into a surgical registrar role, you first need to land the job. For many, the easiest transition is in a department where they’ve already worked as an intern or house officer. The advantage? Senior staff already know you, and you know them. This familiarity is valuable—understanding your bosses and their preferences will make life a lot smoother as a new registrar.
Of course, wherever you apply, the process is formal: submitting an online application, CV, cover letter, references, supporting documents, and—of course—attending an interview.
Finding an Opening
Start by working out which hospitals have vacancies in the specialty you want. Speak to colleagues already working there—they’ll give you honest insights into the workload, culture, and expectations. They may also point you toward the right selectors or administrators who can provide extra details about the role.
Identifying Key Deadlines
Applications come with multiple moving parts. Missing a date can cost you the job, so put them straight into your calendar. Key dates to track:
Application opening/closing dates – don’t leave things to the last minute.
Reference deadlines – contact referees early so they’re prepared for calls or forms.
Interview dates – arrange leave in advance and set aside time to practise.
Offer announcements – know when results are due. Offers usually come with an acceptance deadline, and the last thing you want is to miss an email stuck in your junk folder.
Fulfilling Pre-Requisites & Gathering Documents
Most registrar positions require evidence of certain qualifications, registrations, and certifications. These often need to be officially verified. Keep everything together in one folder—both hard copy and digital backup—to avoid stress each time you change hospitals.
Common requirements include:
Current Medical Registration
Indemnity insurance
Police vetting/child safety checks
ACLS or equivalent emergency courses
Rotational experience requirements
Certificates of courses or learning modules completed
